Yunus Social Business in India operates through two entities:
1. Yunus Social Business Fund Bengaluru Pvt Ltd (YSBFB):
An RBI-regulated NBFC established in 2017, YSBFB provides debt funding to Indiansocial businesses. To date, it has disbursed ₹67 Cr to ~30 enterprises across sectorslike waste, agriculture, education, and livelihoods. YSBFB also promoted Zero PovertyFunds, an AIF dedicated to invest in WASH and waste-related businesses.
2. Yunus Social Business India Initiatives LLP:
Founded in 2016 to support corporate social innovation and CSR consulting, notablythrough its main programme, Indian Corporate Action Tank, seed-funded by one ofIndia’s most respected domestic foundations. It has worked with leading Indiancompanies designing social business solutions at the intersection of corporate India’score capabilities and social issues. The entity has been dormant for over two years dueto strategic and personnel changes and is being wound up.Both entities are Indian-registered, Indian-staffed, and fully compliant with Indian law, created to support enterprises addressing poverty and social issues in India.
FOUNDING PRINCIPLES:
The two entities were founded on the philosophy of “social business”—using businesstools to solve social problems such as poverty, waste, livelihoods and other issues. Thisapproach draws inspiration from Muhammad Yunus, globally acclaimed for hispioneering work in microfinance and poverty alleviation. He was awarded the NobelPeace Prize (2006) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009) by US PresidentBarack Obama, and has deeply influenced India’s microfinance sector, inspiring thecreation of many of India’s leading MFIs and Small Finance banks. In India, he hasbeen honored widely, including receiving a gold medal from PM Narendra Modi at the102nd Indian Science Congress for “giving the poorest a life of hope, opportunity anddignity”
RESPONSE TO EVOLVING POLITICAL CONTEXT:
Since August 2024, Muhammad Yunus’s appointment as Chief Advisor to Bangladesh’sinterim government has altered the context in which these entities were established. Asnon-political, India-focused organisations, we unequivocally condemn anti-India remarksmade by any one. While the use of "Yunus" in our names at inception reflected respect for MuhammadYunus’ social business philosophy, neither of the two India entities bear any legalrelationship with Prof Yunus. Consequently, the current political climate compels us totake clear steps to dissociate from any perceived political affiliations.
1. YSB India Initiatives LLP is being wound up.
2. YSBFB will undergo a name change to better reflect its Indian identity and mission.
